How to Grow Pink Beans Successfully

Pink beans grow best in well-drained, loamy soil enriched with compost. Before planting, loosen the soil to at least 8 inches deep to allow the roots to establish freely. Sow seeds directly in the ground after the last frost, or year-round in tropical climates like Puerto Rico. Water consistently but avoid overwatering, as beans are sensitive to root rot in overly wet conditions.

As the plants grow, provide light support if needed and keep the area free of weeds that compete for nutrients. Bean plants are nitrogen-fixing, which means they naturally enrich the soil as they grow – making them a great companion plant in any garden.

Harvest green pods when they are plump and firm for fresh eating. For dried beans, allow pods to fully mature and dry on the plant before picking. Store dried beans in a cool, dry place in an airtight container for up to one year.

Culinary Uses

Pink beans are a cornerstone of traditional Puerto Rican and Caribbean cooking. They are commonly used in rice and beans (arroz con habichuelas), soups, stews, and bean salads. Their creamy texture holds up well in slow-cooked dishes and pairs beautifully with sofrito, ham, and tropical spices.
